The oil price has hit its highest level since the financial crisis, amid continuing supply fears over the conflict in Libya and renewed optimism about global economic growth. The cost of a barrel of Brent crude, sourced from the North Sea, hit $119.95 on Monday, its highest level since August 2008.US crude rose to $108.74 on Monday morning, its highest level since September 2008.

Smart meters, which monitor energy use in real-time, will save households £7.3bn over the next two decades, the government said on Wednesday as it set out its strategy for the roll-out of the energy-saving technology. The roll-out - the most comprehensive yet planned in any country – will require 53m smart meters to be installed in 30m homes and businesses, starting in 2014 and finishing in 2019.

Consumer Focus carried out a survey to find out how useful prospective buyers and tenants found energy performance certificates (EPC), which vendors and landlords are legally required to provide when selling or letting a home.
