What to do with a much-loved - but worn out - bike
Guardian Unlimited | 08 Apr 2011
When a bike's lasted you 18 years and thousands of miles you can't just throw it on a skip. Any better ideas? I try not to be sentimental about possessions. It would be tough to lose certain photographs, or one or two items tied particularly closely with certain people or times in my life, but I never really get too misty-eyed about most things. There's one big exception - bicycles. I'm not alone in this.

Do cyclists pose a threat to people with disabilities?
Guardian Unlimited | 05 Apr 2011
A Surrey town has banned cycling in the pedestrianised centre after lobbying from groups representing people with disabilities. Cycling England has come to an end and the backpedalling on some of its successful schemes has already started. Woking, a commuter town in Surrey, last week decided to ban cycling in the centre of town for much of the day. Until now Woking has done a good job as a cycling town.

What will Cycling England's successors do?
Guardian Unlimited | 28 Mar 2011
Critics already fear its successor will be unable to achieve the shift needed toward sustainable transport because it is crippled by the "localisation agenda". The Department for Transport will bring key functions of Cycling England in-house. It says the work can be done better within the...

High-speed rail and the environment: 'the north has protesting voices, too'
Guardian Unlimited | 28 Feb 2011
HS2's second phase threatens Cannock Chase AONB and narrow green belt between Nottingham and Derby. The blunt arrows of the HS2's northern sections to Leeds and Manchester sound relatively uncontroversial at first hearing, but waymarks such as Barnsley, Stoke and Nottingham are surrounded by...

Council plans to remove cycle highway
Guardian Unlimited | 23 Feb 2011
Brighton and Hove city council appears determined to abolish its cycle highway despite the fact that demolition will cost £1.1m. Mary Mears, council leader, said the decision to remove the cycle lane which connects South Downs national park with Hove's seafront was a response to "concerns" from residents and users. She said: "We remain committed to the safety of the cycling fraternity. Unlike some other cycle lanes in the city, the Grand Avenue/Drive scheme is not well used or appreciated.

Letters: Co-ops, cuts and the coalition
Guardian Unlimited | 04 Feb 2011
I must take Tristram Hunt to task on his erroneous view of Charlie Elphicke's "people's port" proposal, which the Dover MP wrongly and variously describes as a co-operative and a mutual society (Little platoons find their level, 2 February). Hunt says Elphicke has "a great plan to turn Dover...

Attention! Military land mountain bikers!
Guardian Unlimited | 24 Jan 2011
Continued reluctance to discuss the issue of biking on military land could leave responsible cyclists excluded from the debate. South-east England may not be blessed with the type of angular geography enjoyed by mountain bikers in Wales, Scotland and northern England, but with acres of army land as...

Making public transport accessible for all
Epolitix.com | 20 Jan 2011
A new E.U regulation provides a "huge opportunity" to advance the rights of disabled passengers, says Lord Low. Transport is one of the biggest, if not the biggest issue of concern to disabled people. Accessible transport can make the difference between being able to travel to a job interview, or exclusion from the labour market. It can make the difference between being able to access essential services in the community, or facing isolation.

London cycle hire: mapping a million journeys
Guardian Unlimited | 07 Jan 2011
Thanks to the sterling work of open data campaigner Adrian Short we now know exactly where the first million journeys taken by London cycle hire users (so-called 'Boris bikes') were from and to. The full dataset is huge - but that hasn't stopped the best data geeks getting involved. Andy Cotgreave of the Data studio has mapped the routes of the most popular bikes (he uses Tableau Public). As he says:1.4 million records is a lot of data.

How can you stop your toes from freezing?
Guardian Unlimited | 20 Dec 2010
Along with black ice and blizzards, cold toes are a surprisingly uncomfortable hazard of winter cycling. What's the solution? I have spent three months in Antarctica and I never once got cold toes. But cycling the six miles to work at the moment, I fear frostbite. The rest of my extremities are fine: my hood keeps my ears warm under my helmet. My fingers warm up nicely in my bog-standard cycling gloves. But my toes abandon me, succumbing to the icy temperatures and throbbing as they freeze.

Tesla Roadster not on grant list
Guardian Unlimited | 14 Dec 2010
Is the car-maker's absence an innocent administrative error in the application process, or a more deliberate ploy? Despite being the world's most famous electric car, there's no sign of the Tesla Roadster today on a government list of nine fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that will be...

Why we should not regulate cyclists
Guardian Unlimited | 14 Dec 2010
Why don't cyclists have compulsory licencing, training and insurance? Because it would be utterly pointless. It doesn't really matter what you write about on the bike blog, at some point a reader will emerge with the same irascible complaint: why, oh why, they ask, should cyclists expect any sympathy - let alone special treatment – when they don't need a licence or insurance? What about number plates? Sometimes, of course, this is mere provocation. But often it's serious.

An Englishman in New York on its cycling perils
Guardian Unlimited | 24 Nov 2010
Matt Seaton, a newly arrived Englishman in New York, on the perils and pleasures of negotiating the grid. Move anywhere new and there's a lot to deal with. Like, where's the nearest supermarket? Is there a decent pizza place nearby? Help, I need a hardware shop. You'd think there'd be a farmer's...

What would you do if you caught a thief?
Guardian Unlimited | 16 Nov 2010
A friend and I were left feeling pretty useless when we caught of couple of lads in the act of pinching a bicycle. I'd just finished work, and I had met a friend with the intention of going to the pub and drinking things. It was just after 7pm, and we headed down Wharfdale Road in London's King's...
