Ice Cap and Glacial Melting
The disappearing world of the last of the Arctic huntersGuardian Unlimited | 02 Oct 2010In the first of a series of dispatches, Stephen Pax Leonard reports on the unique culture of the Inughuit as the sea ice that has supported their ancient way of life melts beneath them. Living in the most northern permanently inhabited settlements in the world, the Inughuit people, or polar Eskimos as they are often known, have eked out an existence in this Arctic desert in the north-west corner of Greenland for centuries.
Climate Change Impacts | Indigenous Knowledge Sea levels may rise by as much as one meter before the end of this centuryScienceDaily.com | 14 Jun 2010Sea levels may rise by as much as one meter before the end of this century, according to new predictions. Melting glaciers may contribute more to the rise in sea levels than scientists have previously realized. "Melting glaciers and the melting ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic will account for 75% of the rise in sea levels, while expansion of the water as it warms will account for 25 %," said Director Jan-Gunnar Winther of the Norwegian Polar Institute
Ice Cap and Glacial Melting | Sea Level Rise Lift off for Europe's climate satelliteThe Independent | 09 Apr 2010A satellite to study how climate change affects Earth's icecaps finally launched into space Thursday five years after a first attempt failed, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced. Its mission is to measure changes in the thickness of the vast ice sheets that overlie Antarctica and Greenland, as well as variations in the thickness of the relatively thin ice floating in the polar oceans.
