UK households to save £23 a year by 2020

Smart meters, which monitor energy use in real-time, will save households £7.3bn over the next two decades, the government said on Wednesday as it set out its strategy for the roll-out of the energy-saving technology. The roll-out - the most comprehensive yet planned in any country – will require 53m smart meters to be installed in 30m homes and businesses, starting in 2014 and finishing in 2019.

France's consumption rose by 7% - and in Europe only Denmark and Ireland used less energy per unit of GDP than UK. The UK is one of the top performers in Europe on energy efficiency, according to a European Commission report. Energy use fell by more than 5% from 2000 to 2008 in the UK – the only major European economy to see a drop. Germany's consumption held level, while France's rose 7%. Overall, energy use in the 27 EU countries increased by more than 4%.

Other than turning down the thermostat and putting on an extra jumper, what can be done to reduce energy? It is no secret that turning the thermostat down by a degree cuts you annual heating bill by 10%. But the advice can be irritating because we know the tips and tricks, and if you're already wearing an extra jumper it's harder to solve the essential problem: much UK housing stock has all the thermal security of a wicker tent.
