LONDON (Reuters) - Robot "fish" developed by European scientists to improve pollution monitoring moved from the lab to the sea in a test at the northern Spanish port of Gijon on Tuesday.

The Steering Committee of the Regional Activity Centre/Regional Marine Pollution Emergency, Information and Training Centre (RAC/REMPEITC) for the Caribbean agreed on a 2012-13 work programme on oil spill preparedness and response, ballast water management, ship anti-fouling, LNG fuel use in ships, and a GIS-system for tracking maritime traffic in the Caribbean.

A huge swath of the waters off Antarctica must be protected from fishing and other industries, environmental groups said on Monday. More than 40% of the region needs to be given protection before one of the world's last true frontier areas is damaged irreparably by human activity, the Antarctic Ocean Alliance (AOA) said.
