Oocyte development and maturity classification of boarfish (Capros aper) in the Northeast Atlantic
Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
This study presents the first detailed investigation of the oocyte development and maturity classification of boarfish, Capros aper, which has recently become the target of an industrial fishery in the Northeast Atlantic.

Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
The stock structure of the Atlantic wolffish was investigated at Icelandic fishing grounds, using 16 microsatellite loci. Despite the potential of the Atlantic wolffish to exhibit genetic structure (lack of eggs/larval dispersal and adults are sedentary), none of the genetic tests applied in this study detected significant genetic differentiation among the contemporary samples as well as among the contemporary and archived samples.

Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
The thiamine deficiency syndrome M74, a reproductive disorder of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) feeding in the Baltic Sea, is related to the fat and thiamine content of prey fish.

Thermal windows supporting survival of the earliest life stages of Baltic herring (Clupea harengus)
Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
Projecting climate-driven changes in marine systems will require knowledge on how thermal windows affect the vital rates of key species. To examine the potential, direct effect of climate-driven warming on southwest Baltic herring, we quantified the survival, development, and biochemical condition of embryos (eggs and yolk-sac larvae) at ten temperatures between 2.9 and 21.7C.

Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
We study the dynamics of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), pollack (Pollachius pollachius L.), and saithe (Pollachius virens L.) in Masfjorden, a small fjord in western Norway.

Historical variations in the year-class strength of beaked redfish in the Barents Sea
Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
The present work provides the first quantitative estimate of the historical fluctuations in the year-class strength of beaked redfish in the Barents Sea. The year-class strength index is based on scientific survey data collected by Norway and Russia during the past three decades.

Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
Larval mortality in marine fish is strongly linked to characteristic traits such as growth and condition, but the variability in these traits is poorly understood.

The relative importance of shallow and deep shelf spawning habitats for the South African chokka squ...
Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
It is well known that the spawning grounds of chokka squid Loligo reynaudii lie along the shallow inshore regions of South Africa's south coast. However, egg masses have been found in deeper water on the Agulhas Bank, and hydroacoustic targets deemed to be large aggregations of spawning squid have been identified. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent, depth range, and importance of deep spawning.

Oxford Journals | 09 Apr 2012
Breeding numbers collected in 12 common tern Sterna hirundo colonies in the Firth of Forth, Scotland, along with sprat landings data for the area, were used to investigate how the dynamics of a shared prey resource may affect different colonies in a region.
