Obama and energy | Michael Tomasky
Guardian Unlimited | 30 Mar 2011
I filled the gas tank this morning, after letting it get uncharacteristically low, and was a tad surprised to look up and see that it came to $48. That's a helluva lot in the good old US of A. It was $3.99 per gallon and is usually somewhere in the vicinity of $2.79 or so. Before we go any further,...

Letters: Standard batteries key to electric cars
Guardian Unlimited | 27 Mar 2011
Many of us would welcome electric cars which closely match the practicality of those propelled by petrol engines (A new Leaf, 26 March). But the greatest impediment is the lack of international standards on the battery system. The limited milage currently available, coupled with the lengthy...

Toyota Lexus: a breakthrough in motoring?
Guardian Unlimited | 16 Mar 2011
Toyota's Lexus CT200h is impressive, but isn't sporty enough to rival BMW 1 series and isn't green enough to be new Prius Design is always about trade-offs. To get more of one thing, you have to lose something else. Car buyers have always had to choose what they were going to pay for - reliability, looks, speed – but that is all about to get far more complicated.

Guardian Unlimited | 13 Mar 2011

High-speed rail and the environment: 'the north has protesting voices, too'
Guardian Unlimited | 28 Feb 2011
HS2's second phase threatens Cannock Chase AONB and narrow green belt between Nottingham and Derby. The blunt arrows of the HS2's northern sections to Leeds and Manchester sound relatively uncontroversial at first hearing, but waymarks such as Barnsley, Stoke and Nottingham are surrounded by...

Council plans to remove cycle highway
Guardian Unlimited | 23 Feb 2011
Brighton and Hove city council appears determined to abolish its cycle highway despite the fact that demolition will cost £1.1m. Mary Mears, council leader, said the decision to remove the cycle lane which connects South Downs national park with Hove's seafront was a response to "concerns" from residents and users. Do electric cars really produce fewer emissions?
Guardian Unlimited | 17 Jan 2011
Can electric cars claim to be 'emissions-free' when they run on electricity generated from the burning of fossil fuels? We keep hearing lots of renewed chatter about how electric cars are about to take off (not literally, of course, although that would be fun) in popularity. But for me, the fundamental question remains unanswered: do they really produce fewer emissions when you take into account that they run on electricity produced, in large part, through the burning of fossil fuels?

Letters: Environmental and economic costs of the high-speed rail line
Guardian Unlimited | 24 Dec 2010
One does not have to be a Chiltern nimbyist to question whether a high-speed rail link between London and the north should get priority over other rail investments; nor to doubt whether it will narrow the north-south divide (Offer for homeowners hit by high-speed rail link, 21 January). If the London-Birmingham link will cost £17bn, we can reckon that completion to Glasgow will exceed £100bn.

UK snow chaos: Why you are to blame
Guardian Unlimited | 21 Dec 2010
