GAMBIA: Small country with a big crisis

SEREKUNDA/JOHANNESBURG 17 May 2012 (IRIN) - In 2011, the rains failed in the Central River region of The Gambia, where Mawdou Danso, a farmer, struggled to raise a crop big enough to tide him over to the next harvest. He invested in an early-maturing, high-yielding rice called Nerica (New Rice for Africa), which had recently became available and promised to fit in well with the erratic rainfall patterns.

African Workshop Prepares Position for AEWA MOP 5

The African preparatory workshop ahead of the fifth Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) helped African countries consolidate common positions on issues of relevance to Africa. The meeting was attended by 25 different African countries, and worked to finalize the draft AEWA Plan of Action for Africa.
