KAMPALA 02 December 2011 (IRIN) - Brandishing a plea for developed countries to make good their promises to reduce carbon emissions, 300 farmers, youths and activists took the scenic route to the COP17 conference in Durban, travelling more than 7,000km from Burundi in 17 days, through 10 eastern and southern African countries, aboard a convoy of buses draped in various national flags.

Burundi: Aid workers worry about food insecurity

High food prices, increasing malnutrition and the impact of La Niña are Burundi's major humanitarian concerns as the country moves from post-conflict to a development phase, say aid workers. "We cannot take short cuts when it comes to development; we need to absolutely address the basic needs of the population before we go beyond that," Jean-Charles Dei, the acting humanitarian coordinator for Burundi, told IRIN.

Jean-Marie Sabushimike of the University of Burundi made a film between December 2006 and March 2007 to demonstrate the environmental challenges facing the tiny central African country of about eight million people. The film shows a mass of water with an island full of birds, dense forest covering several hills, a fast-flowing river whose water is brownish, a stretch of denuded land featuring gullies and tree stumps and the birds again.

Burundi: Fortified rice for 15,000 school-children

Burundi is set to benefit from a rice fortification technology that will not only be the first in Africa but will also help check malnutrition in children through school-feeding programmes. International organizations PATH and World Vision will introduce Ultra Rice, made from rice flour and enriched with micronutrients, including iron, zinc and folic acid, to about 15,000 children from April.

KAMPALA - At least 40 East African chief executive officers (CEOs) recently took public HIV tests, a move designed to show their commitment to fighting HIV in the workplace in an increasingly integrated region. "The objective was to encourage them [CEOs] to be role models, to plan properly for the future but also to plan for employees who are HIV-positive," said Rosemary Ssenabulya, executive director of the Federation of Uganda Employees.

Handheld Computers Speed Up Burundi Food Aid

BUJUMBURA – Aid organisations say a small handheld computer will allow them to more rapidly assess where food aid is needed most urgently. As a result, fewer Burundians will suffer hunger this year. Fifteen years of civil war, combined with extreme poverty, a fragile political process and recurrent natural disasters like floods and droughts, have caused a drastic increase in poverty and hunger in the central African nation.
